Walking in Cornwall from your base at The Fieldhead Hotel

The collection of cliff top and moorland walks accessible from the hotel are perfect for those looking to discover the undeniable beauty of the area around Looe. And from these high vantage points tantalising glimpses of the scenic harbour will soon lead you to explore the town itself….

Whenever you are ready to explore, the friendly team at the hotel can offer you advice and maps on local walking routes – please ask and we will be happy to help in any way we can.

Also when planning your visit, The South West Coast Path website has lots of suggestions for walks in the area, ranging from easy to challenging.

One of our favourite circular walks is via Lammana Chapel. The route (shown here on the SWCP website) passes The Fieldhead Hotel on Portuan Road, follows the coast path and returns via an inland route, before descending into Looe itself.

When following this route you can see the remains of the Lammana Chapel on the hillside as you leave the town of Looe behind. This was an ancient Celtic site which later became a Benedictine Chapel – replacing the chapel on St George’s Island, just offshore. The island was a site of pilgrimage in those times; but so many people drowned trying to reach it that the Lammana Chapel was built instead.

The chapel belonged to Glastonbury Abbey at one point, but by the 14th Century was owned by the local Dawnay family. It was demolished in 1549 during Henry VIII’s infamous Dissolution of the Monasteries.

From the Lammana Chapel, this walk continues inland through valleys and meadows – where you might want to stop for a picnic and enjoy a spot of birdwatching if the weather is fine.

Following the route (which is around 3.5 miles in total) will bring you back to a quiet road which passes through Portlooe and down West Looe Hill, where you can either carry on into town to browse the shops and perhaps find a friendly pub to rehydrate, or return to The Fieldhead Hotel.

These short walks are fantastic for getting to know the local area, which is full of history and interesting sites.

If you are walking a longer stretch of the coast path, The Fieldhead Hotel is ideally located for breaking your journey. Providing a chance to rest and enjoy a spot of luxury, our hotel in Looe also offers an excuse to get to know the town a little better rather than simply passing through.
